Learn practical, articulate English for everyday and professional situations. Online lessons designed for your goals, whether it's work, education, or conversation.
Hello, I'm Hugh Wise. With a Cambridge CELTA certification, a Russell Group Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Science, and over five years of teaching experience, I have helped a great many students speak with more assurance, and be understood with less effort.
My focus is on practical, eloquent English — the kind you can use confidently in everyday conversation, yet polished enough to command respect in the most formal settings. Whether you want to navigate daily interactions with ease or impress colleagues and peers with sophisticated, articulate expression, I offer the full spectrum: from functional communication to refined, high-level English that wouldn't be out of place in a boardroom, an academic lecture, or the pages of The Economist.
I know that speaking English can feel daunting, especially when you're worried about making mistakes or not being understood. That's why my teaching style focuses on building your confidence alongside your skills — so you can express yourself freely and naturally, without hesitation.
I was educated at Winchester College, often regarded as the finest school in the country. Its emphasis on academic rigour and precise, articulate speech shaped my approach to language teaching. That foundation in English and the humanities is something I bring to every lesson, helping my students become articulate, confident speakers.
My living comes from English in more ways than teaching. For the past six months I have been a writing specialist for DataAnnotation, training frontier AI models in written English. The task is to read what a model has written and say exactly what is wrong with it. Outright errors are the straightforward part, and a model learns them quickly. The difficulty lies in the sentence that is grammatically sound and still wrong — the register that slips a degree, the idiom bent slightly out of shape, the phrasing no native speaker would choose and few could explain why. Those judgements become the material the model is trained on. The work is graded; mine sits in the top tier, and they have since invited me onto their internal team.
That is close reading of an unusually unforgiving kind, and it asks for the same faculty a lesson does. Very little of what I correct in a student's English is the sort of mistake a grammar book would catch. It is the distance between what was said and what was meant, and naming that distance quickly is most of the skill.
I write, too. A feature of mine ran in The Times magazine — four pages, published anonymously, the subject being sensitive enough to require it — and I have worked as a writing consultant on the US politician and author Marianne Williamson's Global Talent visa application, overseeing it from first draft to submission. It was granted, and she has since given me a written reference. These are the same act performed on different material: taking English that is nearly right and making it exactly right. That is most of what happens in a lesson, too.
I work with committed, motivated learners who have at least a B1 level (basic conversational skills required):
Each hour-long lesson is designed to build your confidence in both professional and day-to-day English. After your free intro call, we'll build a clear picture of where your English is now — so we can focus fully on your goals from the very first lesson.

Real results from real students who achieved their English language goals
"Wise is simply fantastic. He has a natural gift for teaching and can explain what appears to be the most complex things in memorable and easy to digest gems. He is incredibly patient, flexible and makes every lesson fun. In just a few lessons I have progressed to being able to converse with native English friends. If you are thinking about learning English, then Wise is without doubt one of the best choices you could make."
"I really enjoyed Mr. Wise's English classes. As I was a beginner in English, my skills such as reading, writing, speaking and listening have improved a lot. Now I feel more confident to communicate with people, with no shame to speak out! He is one of the most dedicated, helpful and knowledgeable teachers that I've had."
"I started my course with Hugh with a passive knowledge of English and a lack of confidence to express myself. I had a real block with English, which is essential in my job. The lessons with Hugh enabled me to express myself very quickly and efficiently in everyday life as well as in a professional or academic context. After six months I was able to get a 7 in my IELTS which I thought was impossible. I highly recommend Hugh for his patience and expertise."
"Mr Wise was a very helpful English teacher for me. He helped me to improve my reading and vocabulary skills. He helped me to feel more confident and comfortable, and his accent made me feel like I was in Downton Abbey!"
Real results from dedicated learners
"As a visiting scholar at the University of London in 2022, I took the opportunity to improve my English in group classes. I was lucky enough to have Mr. Hugh Wise as my English teacher for a month. Due to lack of time and the need for more specific courses related to my job, I asked him if I could continue with individual lessons for the rest of my stay."
"During the 5 months that followed, Mr. Hugh Wise was able to adapt his teaching methods with great sagacity to enable me to gain more confidence in myself. He also had the intelligence to highlight my passive or written knowledge of English so that I could use it orally. After six months of private lessons with him, I was able to lead an international symposium I was co-hosting and give an hour-long presentation myself, something impossible 6 months before."
"As a researcher at the National University of Taipei right now, I continue to learn with Mr. Hugh Wise who collaborates in the elaboration of a few documents and projects, helping me with English language issues. His tasks include the improvement of scientific texts in English, including conference papers."
